Technical matters

If you're interested, here is advice on a few 'technical' matters about the County website. If this doesn't make too much sense, you have two options. Simply ignore it (the site will still work!), or email the webmaster if you want to know more. Really simple questions are especially welcomed - they're so much easier to answer! We use this page ourselves as a support resource!

Searching. Our site search is provided by KScripts which indexes all our pages unlike Google etc. which only indexes a subset of each website. To show search results for the few password protected pages we have (which are obviously not indexed) we provide a 'landing' page where we try and provide subject keywords without divulging personal information.

Email. Some of the links on our site (the red words) are email links; these will only work directly if you have an email 'client' on your computer (Outlook or similar). They do not work if you normally go onto the Internet to send your mail. If this affects you (btinternet, hotmail, yahoo etc) then right click the link and choose 'copy', then paste this email address into your email system to send your message.

RSS, Twitter and Social Networking. Most of the pages on our site have a 'latest news' section near the top, between our logo and the 'random' picture. This is generated from an RSS feed (Really Simple Syndication) and that feed is available to anyone who wishes to subscribe - just click the orange logo that appears in the headers of IE Explorer and Firefox browsers.

We tweet our news announcements and details of our training courses as they are released - user name @surreyeast.

Some pages also have a 'Bookmark/Share This' link where we think you might want to bookmark the page in your Favourites, or share the page through Twitter, Facebook or some other social networking site. This link also has options for printing or email the page.

Pictures We have a gallery of unannotated pictures hosted by Flickr here.

If you have an email account with BTInternet or Yahoo, please be aware that their 'spam' filters tend to err on the cautious side, and emails from quite legitimate sources can easily end up in your 'bulk' folder.

We will send emails from two domains - girlguidingsurreyeast.org.uk for general email, and eventbrite.com for training course bookings. Please make sure that your email system knows that these are 'friendly' email sources. You can also add the address webmaster@girlguidingsurreyeast.org.uk to your address book if you have your email set to receive only mail sent from people in your address book. If you are expecting a course related email from us - an acknowledgement for a booking for instance, or confirmation of course details a week or so before the date - it may well be worth checking your bulk mail!

We have taken steps to ensure our mail is treated sensibly by all email providers, but the problems with BTInternet/Yahoo seem especially difficult to resolve.
