Working from their apiary next to the Upper Mill in Ewell Village, these people look after 15 hives and produce honey, wax etc. They also provide a service to the local community in retrieving 'lost' swarms from people's gardens etc (it is an offence to kill a swarm), and are happy to come along to talk to groups of people and show what they do.
The talk is light and entirely suited to all ages from Rainbows upwards, with the opportunity to handle honeycomb and to make candles from beeswax. There are no live bees involved, but the sight of a (very) dead one had a couple of our Brownies ready to move smartly backwards. They didn't turn a hair at the pictures Mollie passed round with bees 20cm long though!
There is an open day at the apiary every year, and goodies to be bought such as honey, biscuits, candles, cakes and soap.
Cost is 50p per head to cover the candles the Brownies got to take home with them (and the honey they ate), but of course any additional donation is very welcome. Contact Mollie Bonard on 020 8647 7424.
