We went here mainly because I worked at Epsom Town
Hall for over 30 years, but visits by all sorts of interested
groups are welcome. And although Epsom has a Mayor because
it is a Borough Council, other areas have District Council
with Civic Leaders too - just ask at your local Council
offices.
Our visit started with a simulated Council meeting with us playing the parts of Councillors and the Mayor being introduced with due pomp and ceremony by the Mace-bearer (also the Mayor's chauffeur). We were allowed to ask many questions (using the microphones) and learnt a lot about what the Mayor and the Council do without it getting boring. We had juice and biscuits with the Mayor who was only too keen to have his picture taken with us, then we had a peek in the Mayor's parlour and a look at the pictures of all the past Mayors.
Our visit was over all too soon (another meeting wanted the room) but it was also a great opportunity to travel by train again.
Contact the Council as far in advance as possible - our Mayor carries out over 400 engagements every year!
