Young Leader registration

From January 2012 details of new Young Leaders will be picked up from'Go!' and a letter sent to the Young Leader direct welcoming them to the Senior Section and giving them some information on what opportunities are available to them. The previous system of Registration forms is no more.

Senior Section CDs and Promise Badges will no longer be sent out from County. Girls wishing to look further into Senior Section opportunities should have access to a copy CD from either their Unit Leader or District Commissioner, who will ultimately be responsible for ensuring that their Young Leaders are properly integrated into the Leadership opportunities available.

It might be worth encouraging your Young Leaders to try the Young Leader Qualification before embarking on any other leadership qualification. The purpose of this qualification is to provide appropriate training for girls over 14 years who want to carry out some form of Leadership within the Girlguiding. It provides a structured programme in which
the skills and knowledge gained can be counted in the future towards the Guide Association Leadership Qualification.

Unit Leaders and DCs should ensure that they have the resources available to help their YL decide which path they wish to follow. It would be helpful if the YLs could be supported in the following ways:

• Opportunities are made available for them to learn and carry out leadership tasks towards the Young Leader Qualification. These skills may be transferred to the Adult Leadership scheme at a later date.
• Encourage them to attend YL meetings and trainings.
• Provide them with the necessary resources (may be a District resource) to enable them to enjoy all the Senior Section opportunities available to them.
• Encourage them to set a good example to your Unit by arriving on time, wearing appropriate uniform and attending regularly.
  

At some point during their time with the Unit they may wish to make or renew their Promise, and Promise badges should now be purchased through local Trading Depots.

DC should hold a copy of the Senior Section CD as a District resource, and some paper copies of the Young Leader Qualification to be handed to girls. Further copies are available from me or from Roo Harmer.
